What’s the album about?
We didn’t intend for the album to have a single central theme, but a diligent lyric transcriptionist might find a lot of disaster references and imagery. We’re not disaster enthusiasts, but we do seem to be surrounded by it these days, both the natural and synthetic kinds. Other fleeting concepts include: art and the people who make it, desert architecture, the sea, California, the fossil record, and piracy.

What does Mega Rama mean?

First, it was the new name of a ship taken over by pirates. Secondly, it is a prefix and a suffix without a root word, enabling any human to fill in the blank. Go ahead, try it. Finally, it is a type of rarely achieved ecstatic state.

Who or what influenced this album?

The Lilys, Herman Melville, Pixies, Thomas Bernhard, Buckminster Fuller, Wer- ner Herzog, Superchunk, David Foster Wallace, Don Caballero, Steve Caballero, Built to Spill, David Berman, Yo La Tengo, Bela Tarr, the Gowanus Canal, Donald Barthelme, skateboarding bulldogs, and The Clean.
